EUSPA taps ESSP for EGNOS service provider role

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) is Europe’s regional satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS). Used to improve the accuracy and reliability of GNSS positioning information, EGNOS is designed to provide safety of life navigation services to aviation, maritime and land-based users across the EU.

ESA to provide SBAS technology for Africa

The Agency for Air Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) have signed an international cooperation agreement to deploy a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS). Based on Europe’s EGNOS technology, the system will serve an area of more than 16.5 million km2, that is one and a half times the size of the area covered by Europe’s EGNOS.

GNSS SBAS and Earth Observation Satellites Help Improve Farm Soil Drainage and Variable Rate Fertilization

Using in situ sensors, GNSS corrections and satellite remote sensing, it is possible to obtain information on soil anomalies, enabling farmers to take corrective actions in the field. This information is given through a pre-set field map which identifies areas needing a specific treatment, leading farmers to an improved cost-benefit ration for their agricultural crops.

Increased Rail Role Urged for Galileo and EGNOS; GNSS Important for Europe’s Green New Deal and Mobility Makeover

“Trains were born in Europe,” opens a recent report on European energy policy from the Jacques Delors Institute in Paris. So also, in some senses, were the Green movement and increased awareness of personal mobility options and potential. For the continent and the European Union community to maintain their world leadership in these two areas, the rail sector must play a greater role than it does presently, argues report author Matthias Ruete. He sees Galileo and EGNOS, the two European GNSS, as essential to this strategy.

Brexit Settlement Sweeps UK Out of Galileo and EGNOS

According to a statement on the UK Government’s official website, as of January 1 the United Kingdom will cease participation in the European Galileo and European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service(EGNOS) programs. British citizens and other private users are not affected, apparently: “devices that currently use Galileo and EGNOS, such as smart phones, will continue to be able to do so.”
