GPS Backup May Get More Attention as Lawmakers Highlight Risks to Space Assets, Critical Infrastructure

China, Russia and other adversaries including Iran and North Korea pose a threat to U.S. infrastructure on the ground and in space according to a new congressional report,  a conclusion that may sharpen lawmakers’ focus on building a recently mandated backup system for GPS timing,

The Worldwide Threat Assessment, released Wednesday by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, says that all four nations plus criminal organizations have the ability to use cyber techniques to create local disruptions of critical infrastructure.

ION’s ITM/PTTI 2019 Kicks Off in Fine Fashion on Tuesday

The first full day of the Institute of Navigation’s ITM/PTTI 2019 conference wrapped up Tuesday after a busy, education-filled day at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston, Virginia.

The program kicked off with a welcome and introductions by ION President Dr. John Raquet and program chairs Dr. Olivier Julien (ITM Program) and Dr. Michael Coleman (PTTI Program), who announced that this year marked 50 years of meetings for PTTI, with the first meeting having been held in 1969.

Europe Looking for a Goal in Space

Politics, funding and vision took center stage at the 11th EU Space Policy Conference (2019) in Brussels. The event, which brings together everyone who’s anyone in the European space community, was themed loosely around the idea that it is time to connect with the European citizen.

Elzbieta Bienkowska, European Commissioner for Single Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, reminded participants that European elections are coming soon, and the result will be crucial for everyone, although she did not elaborate or suggest who anyone should vote for.

Geolocation Data Could Get Privacy Protection Under New ADD Act

New legislation aiming to protect the privacy of internet and phone users could shield not just their browsing and buying habits but their location information as well.

The American Data Dissemination (ADD) Act, introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio on January 16, covers service providers that use the internet and “collect records” — a very broad definition. The Act will also be enforced against common carriers — that is telecommunications companies.
