EU’s ESCAPE Project Launches Positioning Module for Autonomous Driving

Automated vehicles are on the way, and the European GNSS Agency (GSA) sees satellite navigation as a core technology that will help to ensure their safe operation. At the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the GSA shared its space with the “ESCAPE” project, a European Union-funded initiative that has developed a unique positioning module for autonomous or semi-autonomous driving.

ENC 2019 Returns to Poland April 9-12

The European Navigation Conference 2019 (ENC 2019) comes to Warsaw, Poland on April 9-12. The European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN) and Polish Navigation Forum (PNF) invite attendees to the conference, which is organized by the Polish Navigation Forum. PNF is a non-profit organization, founded in the ’80s, with the aim of associating people involved in development of the science of navigation. This is the second time Poland is hosting the ENC conference participants, and the venue will be the Novotel Warszawa Centrum Hotel.

Munich Satellite Navigation Summit 2019 Theme is “Augment Yourself with GNSS…”

Officials for the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit announced the theme for the 2019 event while attending the ION GNSS+ conference in Miami last fall and are now preparing for their 2019 conference in the spring.

“Augment Yourself with GNSS…”  will be the theme of the 2019 edition of the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit, taking place on March 25–27, 2019 at the Alte Kongresshalle in Munich. The organizing Institute of Space Technology and Space Applications (ISTA) of the Universitaet der Bundeswehr Muenchen will invite experts from all over the world to talk about the latest news on Positioning, Navigation, and Timing and their role for Augmented/Mixed Reality as well as other up-to-date technologies.

FAA Selects NovAtel to Provide Safety-Critical Infrastructure for North American Navigation Network

NovAtel has been awarded a contract from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to design, produce and deliver 40 next-generation Ground Uplink Station (GUS) Signal Generators to support the FAA’s safety of life Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) navigation service. The contract also includes ongoing engineering support services for NovAtel’s complete portfolio of Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) products deployed by the FAA, including the WAAS G-III reference receiver platform.

Ligado-Related Lawsuit Recommences Jan. 2

Though 2019 is brand new there are a host of GPS-related issues carrying over from 2018. This is one in a series of stories on satellite navigation issues on the table as the new year gets underway.

Virginia-based Ligado Networks and its predecessor firm LightSquared have been pushing since 2011 to change the rules governing how its spectrum can be used — a move essential to building a ground-based communications network that navigation experts insist will interfere with GPS receivers.
