ION 2011 International Technical Meeting

Catamaran Hotel, San Diego

The Institute of Navigation International Technical Meeting (ITM) will take place January 24-26 at the Catamaran Hotel on Mission Bay in San Diego California.

Paul Kline of Honeywell Aerospace is the general chair. Jade Morton of Miami University, Ohio, is the program chair.

"Robotics Navigation" is the plenary session topic. Invited speakers will discuss current trends and future technologies that support navigation for surveillance, search and rescue, undergound and underwater robotics and unmanned air vehicles.

GNSS Simulation: A User’s Guide to the Galaxy

FIGURE 1: Screenshot of RF simulation software showing GPS + GLONASS + Galileo constellations

In the first article in this series (Inside GNSS, July/August, 2010) we looked at the range of tasks that require GNSS signal simulation during design, manufacturing, certification, and maintenance of GNSS equipment. The second installment (Inside GNSS, September, 2010) described a range of simulation solutions.

In this final article, we try to find a simulation solution that best suits a particular task.

When GNSS Goes Blind

A completely GPS-based navigation solution is generally not feasible in GNSS signal–challenged environments such as urban canyons. However, even in these difficult environments a partial set of GPS signal measurements may still be available. For instance, one or two satellites are generally still visible even in dense urban canyons.

A Fully Digital Model for Kalman Filters

Q: Is it possible to define a fully digital state model for Kalman filtering?

A: The Kalman filter is a mathematical method, purpose of which is to process noisy measurements in order to obtain an estimate of some relevant parameters of a system. It represents a valuable tool in the GNSS area, with some of its main applications related to the computation of the user position/velocity/time (PVT) solution and to the integration of GNSS receivers with an inertial navigation system (INS) or other sensors.

Help from Above

During flight testing, Boeing technical personnel have historically used a differential GPS (DGPS) system as the position truth reference for validating various production systems on the airplane. The majority of those tests occur on or near remote runways to capture specific environmental conditions.

Generating Carrier Phase Measurements

Q: What is the carrier phase measurement? How is it generated in GNSS receivers?

A: Simply put, the carrier phase measurement is a measure of the range between a satellite and receiver expressed in units of cycles of the carrier frequency. This measurement can be made with very high precision (of the order of millimeters), but the whole number of cycles between satellite and receiver is not measurable.

Very sad news from Moscow. Earlier this month, Stanislav Sila-Novitsky — Stas to his friends and colleagues — died unexpectedly after a short illness.

A member of the executive staff of Javad GNSS, Sila-Novitsky had a long career in space electronics engineering. During the Soviet era, he was the department head with the Russian Space Agency’s Institute of Space Device Engineering, which was responsible for the development of the overall GLONASS system electronics.
