International CTIA Wireless, the mobile industry’s annual mega-trade show in Las Vegas, takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Tuesday, March 23 through Thursday, March 25 2010 with a pre-conference on March 22.

It covers everything – technology to retail – about wireless and converged communications, wireless broadband, applications, mobile web and data.

Educational sessions on March 23 and 24 include one aimed at engineers and designers, "Next-Gen Networks and Devices."

u-blox Software Will Support Microsoft Windows 7 Location API

u-blox has its support of Microsoft Corp.’s initiative to facilitate development of location-aware applications on Windows 7.

Through the release of u-blox’ driver supporting Microsoft’s Sensor and Location application programming interface (API), software developers will have a standardized interface to the entire line of u-blox GPS chips and modules, according to Michael Ammann, u-blox’s vice-president of embedded software. The Sensor and Location platform for Windows 7 provides a simple way to access data from a wide range of external sensors.

Anritsu Selects IFEN GNSS RF Simulator for A-GPS Testing

Anritsu Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of test and measurement equipment, has selected IFEN’s NavX-NCS Standard GNSS simulator as its assisted-GPS (A-GPS) test system for use in developing mobile terminals.

The NavX-NCS is a GNSS RF navigation constellation simulator capable of simulataneously simulating signals from up to nine L-band frequencies in the GPS, Galileo, GLONASS (including its new G1 frequency), and QZSS systems.

[Updated 4/26/09] On March 31, the U.S. Patent Office granted Loctronix Corporation its first patent, which will provide the foundation for its Spectral Compression Positioning (SCP) technology that enables multi-source positioning capability in a single sensor. Subsequently, the company announced that it had successfully achieved meter-level ranging performance using CDMA cellular signals.

Federal Commission Backs Mileage Fees over Gas Taxes, Champions GPS Technology

Maybe it was just poor timing.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood’s passing comment that systems for assessing fees based on vehicle miles traveled (VMT) rather than gasoline taxes was quickly shot down by White House press secretary Robert Gibbs in a February 20 news conference.

On February 26, however, the congressionally mandated National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission (NSTIFC) came out with a recommendation the United States should do exactly that — and pointed firmly to GNSS systems as a key enabling technology for accomplishing such a transition.

u-blox has announced the immediate availability of a GPS “PCI Express Mini” card. The card enables laptops, netbooks, mobile Internet devices, and “Ultra Mobile” PC OEMs to provide GPS and location-based services such as personal navigation, services/people finder, and geo-tagging.

Sales of mobile PCs with integrated GPS are projected to grow from 3 million units in 2007 to 45 million units in 2011, according to the company.

GPS-Monitored Vehicle Fees: Change You Can’t Believe In

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

One change that apparently won’t happen under the Obama administration is replacing the federal gasoline tax with a GPS-monitored mileage fee.

In an interview with the Associated Press last week, U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) Secretary Ray LaHood had suggested that his agency should look at a “vehicular miles program where people are actually clocked on the number of miles that they traveled.”

It was one of the shortest flights of a trial balloon so far this year.
