Map Africa 2010

Map Africa 2010 conference and exhibition will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in the center of Cape Town, South Africa on November 23-25, 2010.

The theme is "Geospatial Readiness for Building Africa." The conference will focus on the most pressing areas that contribute to the nation’s growth, such as infrastructure and utilities, cadastral mapping, land information management system (LIS), land policies, mining and exploration and emergency management.

G-spatial EXPO 2010

The theme of the G-spatial Expo is "When and Where," how geospatial information is changing our lives.The goal of the event is to promote space-based positioning, navigation and timing technologies and to inspire new businesses that use geospatial information.

It will take place at Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, Japan on September 19-21, where more than 30,000 visitors are expected during the run of the event.

China Approves License for 18 Mapping Services — AutoNavi Included, Google Unlikely Choice

Late in May, China implemented new standards aimed at preventing "state secrets being disclosed and uncertified maps published online." A major component to this push was a requirement that all online mapping services are operated with a license. The first 18 companies, of the ones that applied for a license, have been approved.

DARPA Network Challenge Abandons GPS for the Power of Social Networking

Want to win $40k? DARPA gives you one day to locate 10 of these 8-foot weather balloons moored across the USA

(Updated December 7, 2009) A Massachusetts Institute of Technology team won the DARPA Network Challenge on Saturday, December 5. They took home a $40,000 cash prize from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The team successfully located 10 eight-foot diameter, bright red weather balloons moored in plain site at locations across the United States.

Apparently, the DARPA personnel in charge were sensitive to frigid winter weather in the heartland –  most of the balloons turned out to be moored in pleasant places for an outdoor December search: Portland, Oregon; San Francisco and Santa Barbara, California; Scottsdale, Arizona; Katy, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; Charlottesville, Virginia; and Christiana, Delaware.
