Positioning Technology in Australia Gets a $12 Million Boost

With the Australian government’s announcement earlier this month that it would invest $12 million in a two-year program looking into the future of positioning technology in Australia, comes plans for testing of satellite based augmentation systems (SBAS) to be undertaken, and for future applications for all four major modes of transport in Australia, as well as for potential safety, productivity, efficiency and environmental benefits.

A new reports says that the GNSS market landscape is growing because of rapid growth of satellite technology-enabled wearables, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), new innovation opportunities, and low-cost precision receivers.

ABI Research’s new GNSS integrated circuit (IC) vendor competitive analysis says that Broadcom and Qualcomm remain the two top companies for the fourth straight year.

Topcon to Distribute Intel Falcon 8+ UAS in North America

Topcon’s Intel Falcon 8+

Topcon Positioning Group will distribute Intel Corporation’s Falcon 8+ System, a V-shaped, eight-rotor unmanned aerial system (UAS) in North American markets.

Announced at Intergeo 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, the Intel Falcon 8+ features triple-redundant AscTec Trinity autopilot capability and has full electronic system redundancy, the company said. It also includes the Intel Cockpit ground control and Powerpack smart battery system.

2016 ITS World Congress: Intelligent Transportation Systems

It is by now well known that GNSS-based localization in built-up urban environments can be extremely inaccurate. This is a fundamental problem that hardware enhancements cannot solve.

A GNSS receiver estimates 3D location and timing from pseudoranges from four or more satellites, assuming that these pseudoranges correspond to direct line-of-sight (LOS) paths from each satellite. In urban canyons, however, the signal from a satellite to the receiver suffers from multipath propagation and shadowing.
