Yes, it’s that time — when we try to anticipate what 2011 holds for GNSS by analyzing (or just trying to remember) the highlights of the past 12 months in our global navigation satellite system industry.
First, 2010 was a busy year. Successful launches of 13 new satellites brought the number of GNSS spacecraft in orbit to more than 60. The highest level yet for both numbers launched and in the collective GNSS constellation.

We’ve come a long ways from the attitudes of the Cold War environment in which the Global Positioning System and GLONASS programs arose.
But that doesn’t mean that GNSS competition is a thing of the past. Indeed, the second most-read item on the Inside GNSS website during this year was a March 2009 article entired “GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Compass: What GNSS Race? What Competition?”

Portland waterfront walk, west sideION GNSS 2011 will take place at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon from September 20-23. Tutorials will be held on September 19 and 20.
This will be the 24th international technical meeting of the Satellite Division of the Institute of Navigation. It is the world’s largest and oldest GNSS conference,
founded in 1987 as the ION GPS conference.
The headquarters hotel is Portland’s downtown Hilton and Executive Tower.

As the end of 2010 approaches, many organizations award the special efforts and accomplishments of companies and individuals during the past year.
The GNSS industry is no exception. Here are some of the most recent awards and honors.
NovAtel Wins Export Award
NovAtel Inc., has won the 2010 Alberta Export Award for Advancing Technologies, an award that recognizes companies who “have effectively harnessed the powers of intellectual property and value-added know-how.”
Core GNSS Markets. GSA dataThe European GNSS Agency (GSA, formerly European GNSS Supervisory Authority) predicts that the market for GNSS will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11 percent over the next decade, reaching some €165 billion (US$225.7 billion) for the core GNSS market in 2020.
Released on November 12, the GNSS Market Report is the first of a series that the GSA plans to produce in its ongoing GNSS Market Monitoring Process, according to Gian Gherardo Calini, head of the GSA Market Development Department.

The event features high-level discussions about all of the world’s navigation satellite systems. It is organized by the Institute of Geodesy and Navigation at University FAF Munich.
The technical program begines with a plenary presentation on "GNSS in Balance," followed by a Bavarian State Reception.

Thailand’s largest island and a popular tourist destinationThe 2nd Asia Oceania Regional Workshop on GNSS will be held in Melbourne, Australia, on November 21–22, in the two days before the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Form (APRSAF) annual meeting in the city.
The free event will take place at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in Storey Hall at 342 Swanston Street. Registration is required on the event website.

The first workshop on passive reflectometry using radiocom space signals is organized by two technical competence centers (CCT) of the French space agency, CNES. They are signal and images processing (TSI) and Position datation by satellite (PDS).
It will take place on December 1 2010 at the Institut Aero Spatial in Toulouse, France.

Royal Geographical SocietyA one-day symposium on navigation for unmanned aerial vehicles will take place at the Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, in London on February 1, 2011 from 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
It is sponsored by the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) and will cover design and operation of UAVs, including:
• Mission planning
• Remote control
• Autonomous control
• Navigation sensors and integration
• Terrain mapping
• Legislation
• Safety
ENC 2011, the European Satellite Navigation conference, will be organized by the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) at London’s new Grange Tower Bridge Hotel in the heart of the City. The hotel is next to St. Paul’s cathedral and close to Oxford and Regent streets.
The annual ENC focuses on European satellite navigation developments. It is hosted by EUGIN, the European Group of Insitutes of Navigation.
