The past 15 years have witnessed tremendous developments of new and modernized satellite-based navigation (satnav) systems, including GNSSs, regional systems, and space-based augmentation systems (SBASs). These have been enabled by the original designs of GPS and GLONASS and, in turn, have stimulated the design of satnav signal structures with different characteristics from those pioneer systems.

Specifically designed for those attending the 2013 Institute of Navigation GNSS conference, this four-day course will take place before that event on Friday, September 13; Saturday, September 14; Monday, September 16 and Tuesday, September 17 in Nashville, Tennessee.
It will be taught by Dr. John Betz, the MITRE Corporation.
This course requires a solid background in GPS and familiarity with basic signal processing techniques and engineering mathematics.

Doctoral-level graduate students and early-career engineers, researchers and instructors from Japan and the rest of the world will meet at a weeklong summer seminar this August in Tokyo, sponsored by the Institute of Positioning, Navigation and Timing of Japan.
The summer school will take place in from August 19 through August 24 at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT). Classes wil be held in English.
The 2013 European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is about to close to new submissions of GNSS application ideas, but organizers have decided to extend the deadline until midnight on Sunday, July 7.
The ESNC prize pool is worth about €1 million, which includes cash prizes, business incubation, coaching, patent consulting, prototyping and marketing support, access to customers and user communities, and publicity.

Dee Ann Divis, a contributing editor for Inside GNSS, has won the 2013 Dateline award for Washington Correspondent from the Society of Professional Journalists – DC Chapter for the second year in a row.
The award recognizes a series of stories published over the past year in Inside GNSS about a controversial British Ministry of Defense attempt to patent technology underlying new GNSS signals, including GPS and Galileo.

A European GNSS Service Center (GSC), has opened in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid, Spain to serve as an interface between the Galileo navigation system and user communities of the open and commercial services provided by the European GNSS system. The European GNSS Agency (GSA) will operate the facility.
Member states of the European Patent OrganizationThe European Patent Office will award a brand-new prize for the best patented satellite technology in the 2013 European Satellite Navigation competition, or Galileo Masters.
The winner – or winners -will receive a detailed economic study on the market potential of theirinvention. They will also have chance at the EPO’s 2014 European Inventor Award.

A former officer in the Italian Air Force, Antonio Tajani has been vice-president of the European Commission (EC) since May 2008. Tajani is, however, also the current European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship, which makes him top man at the European Union (EU) directorate-general that oversees the Europoean GNSS programs, particularly Galileo and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

Honestly, one gets the feeling that the European navigation community has finally had enough of talking and is ready to take Galileo out of the hands of politicians and put it into the hands of users, including businesses that can translate European GNSS into real products and services to be bought and sold.
The feeling has certainly been growing within the European navigation community, as evidenced by the conversations at the recent European Navigation Conference (ENC) in Vienna.
