DOT Report on Backup PNT Technologies Finds NextNav Performs Best, Calls for Synthesis and Synergy

The Department of Transportation (DOT) submitted its “National Timing Resilience and Security Act: Roadmap to Implementation” report to Congress in mid-January. Following a competitive application process, demonstrations and review of 11 candidate technologies to back up GPS capabilities, the DOT concluded that “none of the systems can universally backup the positioning and navigations capabilities provided byGPS and its augmentations.” However, “all vendors demonstrated some PNT performance of value, but only one vendor, NextNav, demonstrated in all applicable use case scenarios.”

New Broadcast RTK Corrections over Satellite Radio Enable On-Road Autonomy

The SiriusXM satellite radio network now broadcasts GNSS corrections from Trimble’s RTX service. New cars sold in the contiguous U.S. and Canada equipped with SiriusXM’s Gen8 satellite chipset will be able to receive RTX GNSS corrections, without the need to access a cellular network, thus enabling high-accuracy positioning, a key component of autonomous on-road applications.

Taoglas, a provider in antenna designs, unveiled its new active, multiband GNSS antennas, the MagmaX2 AA.200 and Colosseum X XAHP.50, engineered for  applications that require critical high-accuracy positioning and timing, including autonomous driving and precision agriculture applications. The lightweight, cost-sensitive compact antennas can obtain similar levels of multipath rejection compared to conventional geodetic antenna, according to the company.
