This month (November), Sweden’s Berg Insight released its study, “Connected Navigation Devices," addressing the personal navigation device (PND) market. The 90-page report says that 2006 PND sales reached 9 million units in Europe, 2.8 million in North America. In 2007, Berg forecasts that sales will reach about 16 million units in Europe and roughly 6.5 million in North America.
More than 60 vendors from the GPS-device, navigation software, consumer electronics, car infotainment industries are selling PNDs on the European and North American markets. In the first half of 2007, the four largest vendors, TomTom, Garmin, Mio Technology and Magellan, have managed to increase their combined market shares in Europe and North America to slightly more than 80 percent, according to Berg researchers.
In October, Dublin, Ireland–based Markets and Research, published “GPS Chips in Mobile Devices,” which predicts that GPS shipments will increase from 110 million units in 2006, to 725 million in 2011. GPS chipset revenues are expected to grow from $520 million in 2006, to more than $1.3 billion in 2011, with “extremely high volumes offsetting the very rapid chipset price erosion.”

ABI Research, Oyster Bay, New York USA, will add its perspective with an upcoming report, “Consumer Navigation Devices and Systems: The Changing Dynamics of OEM, Aftermarket, PND, and Handset-based Navigation,” due out this quarter. The study examines the major navigation features, trends, drivers, and barriers including a detailed strengths/weaknesses/opportunities/threats analysis for each navigation form factor.
Special focus areas include navigation use cases and modes, connected navigation, user interfaces, convergence, segmentation, digital maps, real-time traffic information and user-generated content. The study contains forecasts by region for shipments and revenues of OEM and aftermarket systems, non-connected and connected PNDs, on-board and off-board handset-based navigation systems and future form factors.
