Galileo Satellites Readied for Friday Launch

[Updated October 11, 2012] The next two Galileo satellites have been cleared for launch on Friday (October 12, 2012), a couple days later than originally planned.

India’s Second GAGAN Payload Heads into Space

Arianespace successfully launched India’s GSAT-10 satellite this evening (September 28, 2012) on board an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The GSAT-10 carries India’s second GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) payload, following a successful launch of the nation’s first space-based augmentation for GPS last year.

China Launches Two More Compass/BeiDou-2 Spacecraft

China successfully launched another two Compass/BeiDou satellites into space at 3:10 a.m. Beijing time on Wednesday (September 19, 2012), according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

They were the 14th and 15th satellites for the nation’s GNSS system, and presumably the fourth and fifth middle-Earth-orbiting (MEO) satellites in the constellation. The satellites, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, were boosted by a Long March-3B carrier rocket.

GPS, Galileo Launches Near; GSA Opens Prague Office

The U.S. and European GNSS programs will launch satellites within a week of each other next month.

A GPS Block IIF satellite is scheduled to be lifted into space on October 4 and a second pair of Galileo in-orbit validation (IOV) satellites, on October 10.

Meanwhile, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) opened its new office in Prague, Czech Republic, last Thursday (September 6, 2012).

Galileo SVs Test ‘Dummy’ MBOC Signal in Space

The first two Galileo in-orbit validation (IOV) satellites in space have achieved a new milestone, transmitting dummy signals in a modulation scheme designed to allow full interoperability with GPS once operational services start.

“This is an advanced modulation technique that offers robust protection against signal interference and the misleading signal reflections known as ‘multipath’,” said Marco Falcone, Head of Galileo System Services.

SSTL, OHB Sign €80m Contract with OHB for Second Round of Galileo Payloads

Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) signed a  €80 million (US$98 million) contract today (July 11, 2012) with OHB System AG to build a further eight navigation payloads for full operational capability (FOC) Galileo satellites.

Under the contract, SSTL will deliver the second batch of FOC space vehicles (SVs), continuing a successful cooperation between the two companies to build the first 14 satellites under the supervision of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Mission Accomplished: ESA Turns Out the Lights on GIOVE-A

With the first two Galileo in-orbit validation (IOV) spacecraft working well, the European Space Agency (ESA) has decided to end the mission of its pioneering GIOVE-A satellite that had long exceeded it original purpose and design life.

Meanwhile, with the next Galileo launch approaching, ESA has expanded its Radio Navigation Laboratory (RNL) to meet the testing needs of Europe’s GNSS program.

Air Force Awards Service Support Contract for GPS III SVs

The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin a $68 million contract to provide mission readiness, launch, early orbit checkout, and on-orbit operations engineering support for the first two GPS III space vehicles.

Under the contract, Lockheed Martin will provide technical support to the Air Force’s 2nd Space Operations Squadron (2SOPS) and monitor the health and performance of the first two GPS III satellites from launch through their 15-year operational design lives.

First GPS III Launch Delayed by Up to a Year, OCX by Two Years

The launch of the first GPS III satellite has slipped to 2015 and completion of the ground control system is now delayed by up to two years, according to the chief of the Air Force’s space operations  

“We’ll be ready to launch the first GPS III in 2015, but it now appears the next generation GPS Operational Control System, or OCX, won’t be ready for about a year or two after that,” General William L. Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command told attendees at the 28th Annual National Space Symposium.

China Plans Another BeiDou Dual Launch in August

China will launch another three satellites for the BeiDou-2 (Compass) system by the end of the year, according to officials speaking today (May 18, 2012) at the China Satellite Navigation Conference (CSNC 2012) in Guangchou.

Meanwhile, in comments quoted by People’s Daily Online edition, the system is expected to be adopted by some of China’s neighboring countries in the next year or two. People’s Daily is the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China.
