LightSquared Charges That GPS Receiver Manufacturers “Ignore” DoD Standards

LightSquared has opened a new rhetorical front in its battle with the GPS community over the company’s efforts to convert L-band frequencies into terrestrial wireless broadband services: claiming in an August 11 letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that receiver manufacturers “chose to ignore” Department of Defense (DoD) standards.

In response, the Coalition to Save Our GPS, a group of GPS receiver manufacturers opposed to LightSquared’s plans, called the company’s filing an act of "desperation."

Senate Proposals for GPS Receiver Standards Won’t Solve LightSquared Issue

LightSquared’s proposed broadband service may cause trouble for GNSS receivers, such as this one, that use commercial satellite augmentation services.

The Senate is considering establishment of receiver standards as part of a wide-ranging effort to find more frequencies for wireless broadband services, a move that could ultimately result in expensive new requirements for the GPS community.

Qualcomm Adds GLONASS Capability to Chipsets

Qualcomm Incorporated has announced the company’s product support for the Russian GLONASS satellite system to enable the use of both GPS and GLONASS networks simultaneously for improved location performance.

The first GLONASS-capable phone is the MTS 945 from Chinese phone manufacturer ZTE developed with Russian chipset manufacturer AFK Sistema and powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM7x30 chipset.

Septentrio has announced plans to release the AsteRx-m, a low-power GPS/GLONASS dual-frequency RTK receiver that is smaller than a credit card.

New Senate Subcommittee Addresses Mobile Technologies and Privacy: Apple, Google to Appear

Funny thing about the U.S. Constitution: it address the activities of government officials and agencies — including restraints on those activities — but not the activities of commercial business and individuals. The latter are left to federal, state, and local laws.

So, when the government conducts warrantless surveillance using GPS, the issue may come before the U.S. Supreme Court or state and federal judges at other levels. If private companies do it, they may end up at a congressional hearing.

NavtechGPS, the Washington D.C.-based GNSS technology trainers, will introduce a new advanced receiver course for engineers and designers in their summer seminar series at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland next July 11-15.

The course is called "Using Advanced GPS/GNSS Signals and Systems." Signal and receiver design expert John Betz, MITRE Corporation, and James Sennott, president of Tracking and Imaging Systems, Inc will teach it.

Continuing a series of acquisitions in recent years, Trimble announced today (April 19, 2011) that the Sunnyvale, California–based company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Ashtech S.A.S.

In announcing the its plans, Trimble said that it expects the acquisition of the Carquefou, France, company and its affiliates will expand the U.S. company’s Spectra Precision portfolio of survey solutions and allow the company to better address emerging markets worldwide.
