New Multi-GNSS Demonstration Campaign Launched for Asia-Oceania

Interoperability in a world of multiple global navigation satellite systems—everybody talks about it, but not much has been done about it in practice. The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) hopes to change that with a five-year campaign demonstrating the benefits and opportunities of maximizing the use of the more than 100 GNSS space vehicles that will be operating over the Asia-Oceania region in the next decade. (See accompanying satellite-visibility graphic).

Space Weather Workshop Highlights Coming Solar Cycle Effects on GNSS

Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft. NASA image

This year’s Space Weather Workshop — held April 27–30 in Boulder, Colorado — reflected a heightened interest in the space environment due to solar effects on GPS and other GNSSes. A solar storm is suspected to have caused the anomaly in Intelsat’s Galaxy 15 communications satellite that carries a transponder for the GPS Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS),

Sampler Plate from Munich Summit

Tony Russo, U.S. National Office for Space-Based PNT

Ah, another Munich Summit plenary session filled with many already-knowns and former unknowns, the latter mostly conveyed in nuances and bon mots.

More about that in news reportage to come.

But in the event’s venue, a recently restored All-Saints Church under der Residenz, the speakers may have felt a little lingering moral pressure to tell the truth. So, a sampler plate of comments may be in order.

Downloadable GPS — Who’d Have Imagined?

Wikimedia Commons

The S-Bahn from Munich’s airport rolls through the frigid Bavarian fields and suburbs toward the main train station — my jumping off spot for the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit.

On its front page, the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper laments the return of winter to Germany just as the crocuses had managed to push their heads through the frozen earth, and on our night-time approach to the airport the lighted villages amid the snowy landscape evoke thoughts of Christmas more than Easter.

But enough with the weather report.
