New u-blox M8 Firmware Now Supports Galileo, Increases GNSS Signal Acquisition Sensitivity and Security

Thalwil, Switzerland–based u-blox has announced the upcoming release of a new firmware, FW 3.01, for its u-blox M8 multi-GNSS platform.

u-blox M8 FW 3.01 will now also support Galileo in addition to GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou. It can track up to three constellations concurrently and makes use of all satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) signals and Japan’s Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) at the same time, according to the company.

Swift Navigation’s Piksi GPS receiver

Having started out with a crowd source–funded launch through Kickstarter followed by two rounds of more conventional venture capital backing — $2.6 million in 2014 and another $11 million last December — San Francisco, California–based Swift Navigation is going after a low-cost, high-precision market such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with its Piksi GPS receiver platform.

u-blox Launches New GPS/GLONASS Receiver Platform for Low-Power Devices

Thalwil, Switzerland–based u-blox announced the release of its u-blox 8 GPS/GLONASS receiver platform today (January 6, 2016).

The new product complements the u-blox GNSS platform portfolio by addressing power-sensitive usage for battery-powered devices such as wearables and sports-training monitors. The existing u-blox M8 platform will continue to address applications where navigation performance and highest accuracy are paramount, according to the company.

New Beijing Airport Extends Trimble Integrated Construction Contract

Trimble announced today (December 8, 2015) that it has received a contract extension to use the company’s technology from Trimble to integrate construction and operations for the high-profile Beijing New Airport Project, expected to be the world’s largest when completed at an estimated cost of $13.1 billion.

In April, Trimble won the initial bid to supply the project with a construction information management system. Based on the success of the solution to date, the contract has been extended to include additional machine control systems for soil stabilization.

New OriginGPS Module Uses MediaTek GNSS Chipset

OriginGPS announced the launch of a new family of products yesterday (October 27, 2015), the first of which is the Multi Micro Hornet ORG1510-MK, an integrated multi-GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou) module based on the MediaTek MT3333 chip.

According to the Israel-based company, the 10x10x6.1 millimeter low-power architecture supports an update rate of up to 10 hertz and contains onboard flash, supporting devices that require full-featured components with small footprints, such as UAVs designed to follow action sports and other fast-moving activities or wearables.

Tokyo-based iP-Solutions (www.ip-solutions.jp) has upgraded its ReGen DIF simulator into the Replicator — a high-end, low-cost, 24-channel GNSS multi-frequency RF simulation solution for academia and R&D.

The Replicator provides its users with the following functions:
·      real GNSS simulation (real-time generation of GNSS signals)
·      the recording and play-back of dual frequency GNSS RF signals
·      GNSS RF signal analysis with JAXA COSMODE ionospheric scintillation monitor.
