Sumitesh Sarkar received his bachelor of engineering from the University of Calcutta and his MTech from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
He joined Space Applications Centre–ISRO, in 1987 and worked for the design and development of RF subsystems for INSAT/GSAT payloads. He later joined the System Engineering Division in the same organization, which is responsible for the system engineering activities of communication and navigation payloads.

At present Sarkar is working in the Satcom & Navigation Payload System Engineering, Integration & Checkout Group as group director.
