In 1589, at the age of 25, Galileo Galilei toiled up the 294 steps of a 55-meter bell tower in Pisa, Italy, where he was tutoring math students at the time.
According to his pupil and later biographer, Vincenzo Viviani, Galileo carried with him two cannonballs, one twice the weight of the other. When he reached the top of the tower, he went to the lower balcony of the tilted structure and dropped the two balls simultaneously.

A survey of 140 attendees at last week’s European Navigation Conference (ENC 2011) in London, England, produced a fascinating assessment of GNSS expectations in the coming years — and how that assessment has changed since 2007.
Sponsored by Helios, a UK business and technology consultancy working in the transportation and technology domains, the survey asked delegates eight questions with multiple choice answers, and recorded their responses using handheld keypads and live electronic voting.

Many technologies are created before their best applications are even thought about. This leads to a business phenomenon known as “technology push” in contrast to “consumer pull.” The True3D Volumetric HUD technology did not share this path.

Photo by Valerie Hall.A San Francisco Bay Area company — Making Virtual Solid–California (MVSC), which snared a trio of awards in a global GNSS competition for its novel approach to driver assistance, is still in early phases of development.
The origins of the company, however, go back more than 40 years to the Cold War era when its principals, Chris Grabowski and Tom Zamojdo, were studying physics and theoretical mathematics at the University of Warsaw, Poland.

MVS-California, LLC, winner of the USA Challenge, took the top global prize in this year’s European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) with the company’s True3D Head Up Display & Navigation System.
The company’s innovation is an augmented reality navigational display engine designed to provide non-distracting, translucent location guidance to untrained operators of any type of vehicle.
Georeader, a free Android Smartphone app that allows written text to be placed at any GPS location, was the audience favorite of five USA Challenge GNSS application idea contest finalists profiled at the September ION GNSS 2011 conference in Portland, Oregon.

eVotz plans to make the voting booth passé.The 2011 USA Challenge will give ION GNSS participants a chance to pick their favorite satellite navigation application from this year’s contest using eVotz, a mobile voting platform that won the competition last year.
