Developed under the auspices of the Russian Institute for Space Device Engineering (RISDE), Glospace will be sold through the country’s Ion retail stores, where it was launched on December 27. However, most of the first 1,000 units produced were pre-sold and only demonstration models were available in the stores, according to new reports. New deliveries of the SGK-70 are expected early this year.

Although Russia has produced a limited number of domestic models of GLONASS receivers for military and governmental users, the Glospace receiver may be the country’s first such device intended for consumers. Over ther years, several foreign companies, beginning with Ashtech in the early 1990s, have produced GLONASS-GPS receivers for commercial users.

The SGK-70 can also receive traffic data from Russia’s Smilink real-time traffic service, and then provide onscreen displays of detours or accident locations, according to the company. Price for the Glospace device is just under 12,000 rubles (approximately US$490).
