AUVSI Unmanned Systems North America 2010

The largest annual event focusing on international ground, air and maritime unmanned systems will take place this year at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver from August 24 through 27 2010.

It is sponsored by the industry organization, Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

Organizers expect 5,000 people from 30 countries to attend the four days of general sessions, workshops, poster sessions and live demonstrations of civil, commercial and military applications.

Magellan Professional announced January 7 that the France- and California-based company had renamed itself Ashtech, confirming the staying power of a precision technology brand that first appeared in 1987.

DARPA Network Challenge Abandons GPS for the Power of Social Networking

Want to win $40k? DARPA gives you one day to locate 10 of these 8-foot weather balloons moored across the USA

(Updated December 7, 2009) A Massachusetts Institute of Technology team won the DARPA Network Challenge on Saturday, December 5. They took home a $40,000 cash prize from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The team successfully located 10 eight-foot diameter, bright red weather balloons moored in plain site at locations across the United States.

Apparently, the DARPA personnel in charge were sensitive to frigid winter weather in the heartland –  most of the balloons turned out to be moored in pleasant places for an outdoor December search: Portland, Oregon; San Francisco and Santa Barbara, California; Scottsdale, Arizona; Katy, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; Charlottesville, Virginia; and Christiana, Delaware.

Penina "Penny" Axelrad, University of Clorado professor of aerospace engineering sciences, has received the Johannes Kepler Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Navigation (ION) Satellite Division.

The institute made the award on the final day (September 25) of its ION GNSS 2009 conference held in Savannah, Georgia.

u-blox Software Will Support Microsoft Windows 7 Location API

u-blox has its support of Microsoft Corp.’s initiative to facilitate development of location-aware applications on Windows 7.

Through the release of u-blox’ driver supporting Microsoft’s Sensor and Location application programming interface (API), software developers will have a standardized interface to the entire line of u-blox GPS chips and modules, according to Michael Ammann, u-blox’s vice-president of embedded software. The Sensor and Location platform for Windows 7 provides a simple way to access data from a wide range of external sensors.

746th Test Squadron Spins Up Jamfest ‘09

The 746th Test Squadron (746 TS) will offer authorized GPS users another in its series of JAMFEST training scenarios November 2–6 at at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

Introduced in May 2004, JAMFEST provides a realistic GPS jamming environment for testing GPS-based navigation systems. Since its inception, JAMFEST has hosted a diverse customer base, including multi-service Department of Defense (DoD) groups, defense contractors, and civil organizations with objectives ranging from training personnel in GPS-denied or –degraded conditions to characterizing the performance of prototype advanced anti-jam technologies against operationally realistic threats.
