No Time Like the Present for Europe in Asia

Galileo promoters have always tended to try to link the program to new jobs and economic growth, arguing that once Europe’s global satnav system is up and running, new services will be possible and opportunities for EU companies will abound.

Such arguments needed to be made, to bolster the chronically tenuous political support Galileo has garnered from the European Union (EU) powers-that-be and the chronic lack of faith among just about everybody in Europe’s ability to actually make the system fly.

Galileo Round Up

Say what you want about the European capitol — one thing is for sure, Brussels is alive with conversation. With corporate high flyers and political decision makers tripping over one another on their way to long lunch breaks and after-dinner drinks, the chitchat can flow fast and furious.

If one is not careful, idle conversation can turn into rumor and rumor become a “buzz.”

Brussels View: Remembrance of Things Past

In 2003, China committed to investing €200 million (US$270 million) for the privilege of participating in the development of Europe’s Galileo program. But by 2007 it had been forced out of major decision-making because of security concerns and the collapse of the original financing plan for the program, which was to include public and private money.
