2010 UN-IAF Workshop: GNSS Applications for Human Benefit and Development

The workshop on GNSS Applications for Human Benefit and Development is sponsored by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

It is the 20th joint UN-IAF workshop and will be held at the Prague Congress Centre (PCC) in Prague, Czech Republic just before the 61st International Astronautical Congress that runs from September 27-October 1.  Participants at either event are welcome at the other.

“Michibiki,” Japan’s First QZSS Navigation Satellite, Reaches Quasi-Zenith Orbit

(UPDATED September 27) Japan’s first quasi-zenith satellite launched successfully from the Tanegashima space center on September 11, 2010 and reached its quasi-zenith orbit on Monday, September 27.

Michibiki means to guide or lead the way, appropriate for the first entry into Japan’s satellite augmentation program that will vastly improve GNSS accuracy over Japan and the rest of East Asia.

Few would mistake Oregon for the beating heart of GNSS. Still,  for a medium-sized U.S. metro area in the Pacific Northwest, Portland  and Oregon’s I-5 corridor has enough relevant involvement with the industry to justify hosting the Institute of Navigation’s 2010 GNSS conference and exhibition.

Oregon has FLIR Systems, Cloud Cap Technology, TriQuint, Intel, Garmin and Inside GNSS magazine.

Firmware Update for NovAtel L1 OEMStar Receiver

NovAtel Inc. recently announced the release of Version 1.011 firmware for its L1 OEMStar GNSS (GPS+GLONASS+SBAS) receiver, which the company says is designed to provide improved PDP and GL1DE filter performance, improved satellite tracking in low signal level environments, improved satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) performance when operating outside of the standard grid map, and improved time to first fix.

QZSS Satellite ‘Michibiki’ to Launch on September 11

JAXA has announced the launch date for Japan’s first Quasi-Zenith satellite. On the morning of September 11, H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 18 will carry the satellite, nicknamed Michibiki, to its inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO).

The launch was postponed from August 2 because of problems with the onboard reaction wheels. The malfunctioning part was replaced.

The 2011 Geospatial World Forum (formerly Map World Forum) and industry exhibition will take place at the Novotel and HICC Complex near Hitec City in Hyderabad, India on January 18-21. The theme of this year’s conference is "Dimensions and Directions of Geospatial Industry."

New Multi-GNSS Demonstration Campaign Launched for Asia-Oceania

Interoperability in a world of multiple global navigation satellite systems—everybody talks about it, but not much has been done about it in practice. The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) hopes to change that with a five-year campaign demonstrating the benefits and opportunities of maximizing the use of the more than 100 GNSS space vehicles that will be operating over the Asia-Oceania region in the next decade.
