[Updated June 30] Lucky you – you have three extra days to submit your GNSS application idea to the USA Challenge! The extended deadline is midnight Sunday (Europe) or 3 P.M. (Pacific time) on July 3.

Right now, some team is hard at work in a basement, an office, a dorm room or a lab. They are about to come up with a new, useful and commercially viable idea for a satellite navigation application or location based service.

Supporters of Europe’s Galileo system got some good news today (June 22, 2011) at the Paris Air Show: savings in the program have freed up funds that may be able to support acquisition of at least six additional spacecraft by 2014.

Taking part in a signing ceremony for the final Galileo work packages, European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani announced that improved program management and cost-cutting by industry vendors could free up €300 million ($482.8 million) — enough to ensure that 24 satellites could be launched by 2015.

Galileo Launch Date Set for October

[Updated June 1, 2011] Two Galileo in-orbit validation (IOV) satellites will comprise the first launch on a modified Soyuz rocket from the European Union’s spaceport in French Guiana.

Now scheduled for October 20, the launch will mark the beginning of the creation of the operational constellation for Europe’s GNSS system.

In 2012, for the first time, the annual European Navigation Conference will take place in Gdańsk, Poland.

It will be held at April 25-27 in the Filharmonia convention hall on Olowianka Island. It is at the center of the one of the oldest Baltic cities, near many of the historical attractions of Gdańsk (Danzig).

The theme is "Navigation for the People." The conference will be held in English.

Hey, Kids! Get Your Names on Europe’s Galileo Satellites!

If you are lucky enough to be nine to eleven years old and living in Belgium or Bulgaria, you could get your name on one of the first European navigation satellites.

Two of them will launch from French Guiana in September 2011. Although Europe already has test satellites in the sky, these launches will mark the beginning of Galileo, a global navigation satellite system much like GPS.

Surrey Satellite’s Galileo Payload Passes Preliminary Design Review

Navigation payloads being developed by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) for the full operational capability (FOC) Galileo satellites have passed the preliminary design review (PDR) by panel including the European Space Agency (ESA), demonstrating that they have a sufficient level of design maturity.

 SSTL is teamed with OHB System of Bremen, Germany for the provision of the first 14 FOC satellites. OHB is the prime contractor and builder of the spacecraft platform.
