A subsidiary of Bosch, Hildesheim, Germany–based Blaupunkt produces more than five million car radios and 500,000 navigation systems a year, reporting total sales of more than €1.3 billion (US$1.62 billion) a year. Based in Thalwil, Switzerland, u-blox introduced its first surface-mount GPS receiver in 1998.
The agreement with Blaupunkt, announced November 11, covers a variety of receiver chip and module products and includes a comprehensive quality assurance contract. According to the companies, the relationship will also support the development of new products for in respond to demand for mobile GNSS-related services.
“[The agreement] marks a milestone in our history,” said Karsten Tietz, u-blox’s vice-president of sales for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “Blaupunkt is not only a valuable customer but also an important trigger for future product developments and innovations within the automotive area.”
