Penina "Penny" Axelrad, University of Clorado professor of aerospace engineering sciences, has received the Johannes Kepler Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Navigation (ION) Satellite Division.
The institute made the award on the final day (September 25) of its ION GNSS 2009 conference held in Savannah, Georgia.
With a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, Axelrad has contributed to a wide range satellite navigation research and development, including receiver autonomous GPS integrity monitoring (RAIM), GPS bistatic radar, and satellite formation flying using GPS.
Current research activities include GPS-based orbit and satellite attitude determination, GPS multipath characterization and mitigation, and spacecraft rendevouz.
Axelrad was the subject of a Human Engineering profile article in the September/October 2008 issue of Inside GNSS.
