Lt. Gen. Michael A. Hamel, commander of the Space & Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, will turn over responsibilities to Lt. Gen. John T. "Tom" Sheridan on May 16. General Sheridan was formerly the Deputy Director of the National Reconnaissance Office.

General Hamel will leave SMC, which includes the GPS Wing, after completing his fourth tour of duty at the center, retiring after 36 years of military service. In November 2007 General Hamel was presented with the Air Force Association’s 2007 General Thomas D. White USAF Space Trophy in recognition of outstanding contribution to the nation’s progress in aerospace.
