European GNSS Agency Invites Consultations on Technology Roadmap for Galileo PRS

[Updated Feb. 6, 2014] The European GNSS Agency (GSA) is inviting European industries and European Union (EU) Member State Competent Public Regulated Service (PRS) Authorities to share their views and ideas in support of the adoption of the PRS.

In particular, industries with potential interests and capabilities to support the development of Galileo PRS user segment technologies such as receivers, security modules, dedicated infrastructure, and market enablers are encouraged to join the discussion.

GPS IIFs Back on Launch Manifest

The fifth GPS Block IIF satellites is scheduled for launch from Cape Canaveral on February 20 after concerns regarding a 2012 launch anomaly led the Air Force to scrub a planned launch last fall. A Delta IV M+ will carry the spacecraft into orbit.

Additional GPS IIF launches this year are tentatively set for May (Delta IV M+) and July (Atlas V rocket). The last GPS launch (GPS IIF-4) took place on May 13, 2013.

FY14 Budget Pares GPS Appropriations

The GPS program sustained a cut of more than six percent from the levels in the president’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2014 (FY14), increasing the likelihood that the Next Generation Operational Control System (OCX) will be delayed and putting pressure on budgets in future years to make up for cuts to modernization efforts.

Registration is now open. Sunday, March 23 is the registration and abstract submission deadline.

This meeting will bring together customers, forecasters, vendors, government agencies and researchers of space weather information.

ESA’s Dordain Unapologetic about Galileo at Wide-Ranging Press Conference

Speaking at his annual press conference in Paris last Friday (January 17, 2014), European Space Agency (ESA) Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain was cool, collected and, importantly, positive, as he laid out plans and parried questions on a whole range of ESA issues. From the Rosetta mission to manned space flights, Swarm, Gaia, Sentinel and Copernicus, and of course Galileo, he set the stage for an ambitious 2014.

Canadian Army to Test NovAtel’s GAJT GPS Anti-Jam Antenna

NovAtel has announced that Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has selected the company’s GAJT-700ML antenna, a single-unit GPS anti-jam antenna system, for testing on Canadian Army armored vehicles. The testing is being conducted through PWGSC’s Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP).

NovAtel Supplies Reference Receivers for IRNSS Ground Segment

NovAtel Inc., has announced an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to supply reference receiver products for use in the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) ground segment.

India-based Elcome Technologies Pvt. Limited, a sister company to NovAtel in the Hexagon Group of Companies, will provide local integration, training and technical support services for the NovAtel receivers.

FAA Taps Six Operators for Unmanned Aircraft Test Sites

U.S. aviation officials on Monday (December 30, 2013) named the winners of a high-stakes contest to operate one of six new research and test sites for unmanned aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will now work to help the sites set up safe operations and create the structures needed within the agency to help it use the sites’ research results.
