DHS Taking a Risk-Based Look at PNT Resilience

Emergency Location Services, Airborne Lidar Systems the Focus of ION GNSS+ Keynotes

Cell phones are helping save lives with their location accuracy during emergencies, but they can get even better.

That was one of the messages delivered by Google’s Steve Malkos during his keynote address Tuesday night at the ION GNSS+ Plenary Session in Miami. Malkos, the Technical Program Manager in the Android Location and Context Group at Google, gave one of two keynotes to a packed ballroom of attendees. Paul LaRocque of Teledyne Optech gave the other speech on Tuesday, titled “A Lidar History: From Ship to Air to Space.”

ION’s 2018-’20 Satellite Division Nominations and Voting Announced

Online voting for the Institute of Navigation’s Satellite Division Officers will be available after July 16, and ION is currently accepting additional nominations.

The Satellite Division Nominating Committee, chaired by Dr. John Betz, has submitted the following nominations for Satellite Division Officers:

Chair: Dr. Chris Hegarty, The MITRE Corporation; Vice Chair: Ms. Patricia Doherty, Boston College; Ms. Sandy Kennedy, Hexagon Positioning Intelligence/NovAtel, Canada; Secretary: Dr. Zak Kassas, The University of California, Riverside; Dr. Jason Rife, Tufts University; Treasurer: Mr. Tim Murphy, Boeing; and Dr. Alex Stratton, Rockwell Collins.

Pursuant to Article IV of The Institute of Navigation Satellite Division Bylaws, “Additional nominations may be made by petition signed by at least 25 members entitled to vote for the office for which the candidate is nominated.” All additional nominees must fulfill nomination requirements as indicated in the ION Satellite Division Bylaws and the nomination must be received at the ION National Office by July 13, 2018.

Online voting for the ION Satellite Division Officers will be available after July 16, and completed ballots must be received at the ION office by August 6, 2018 in order to be counted.

Election results will be announced during the 31st International Technical Meeting of the ION Satellite Division being held September 24-28, 2018 in Miami, Florida.

ION GNSS+ Slated for Sept. 24-28 in Miami

The newly elected officers will take office on September 28, 2018 at the conclusion of the meeting and will serve for two years. Election results will be reported in the ION Newsletter.

ION JNC 2018 Early Bird Registration Deadline is June 15

ION’s Joint Navigation Conference (JNC) 2018 early bird registration deadline is Friday, June 15. The JNC, sponsored by the Military Division of the Institute of Navigation, will be held July 9-11, 2018 (FOUO U.S. ONLY) at the Hyatt Regency, Long Beach in Long Beach, California; and the U.S. ONLY CLASSIFIED sessions will be held July 12, 2018 at The Aerospace Corporation.

Book your hotel room by Friday, June 15 to take advantage of discounted conference hotel room rates – Plus, save an additional $200 on your conference registration when staying in the conference hotel. To claim this discount you will be asked to enter your reservation confirmation number from the Hyatt Regency Long Beach at the start of the registration process. This discount will not be applied retroactively, so be sure to book your hotel room first and enter the confirmation number when you register.

PLEASE NOTE: Attendance Restricted
Conference attendance for both FOUO U.S. ONLY (July 9-11) and U.S. ONLY CLASSIFIED (July 12) sessions will be screened by the Joint Navigation Warfare Center and will be restricted to U.S. ONLY. Admission to the classified session will be limited to the capacity of the room and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, to those who submitted visit requests in advance. Attendees requiring onsite security validation will be processed on a space-available basis.  You are encouraged to submit your visit request early.
