Updated Galileo ICD Previews New Features for Faster TTFF in 2023

The European GNSS Agency (GSA) released a new Galileo Open Service Signal in Space Interface Control Document (OS SIS ICD), the second issue of this document geared towards GNSS receiver manufacturers. Although the modified signals are not yet broadcast by Galileo satellites, the ICD will allow GNSS receiver manufacturers to prepare for the improved signals, set for debut in 2023.

SBAS for Aviation Opens over Africa and Indian Ocean

In September, the Agency for Air Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) started broadcasting a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) signal over Africa and the Indian Ocean. This marks the first SBAS open service in the region, modeled based on the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

Galileo Security Monitoring Center Developing Counter-Cyber Defenses and Responses

The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Europe held a virtual workshop in early September on the topic of “Cybersecurity in and for Space Operations.” Speakers told attendees of the threats posed to vital space systems, including Galileo and GPS, by foreign hackers, cyber warfare and online espionage, and of initiatives to harden satellite capabilities against cyber attacks.

Carlo des Dorides Departs from Longtime Post as GSA Executive Director

“Galileo is a true European success story,
and I am proud if in a small way I have contributed to building Europe with it.”

European Union space mainstay Carlo des Dorides, Executive Director of the European GNSS Agency (GSA) since 2011, retired from this post at the end of January.  He was scheduled to speak at the 12th EU Space Conference in Brussels that month, but had to skip out when he was called to a special budget session of the European Parliament. It would have been his last appearance in a public forum as GSA chief. Inside GNSS met with him in Brussels to talk and to say farewell.

Ten Finalists Announced for MyGalileoApp

Selected from 30 projects shortlisted for the MyGalileoApp competition’s first development phase, the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) has revealed the 10 projects that will now advance to the second development phase, at the end of which they are expected to deliver a fully functioning app.
