A Very British GNSS Could Be On the Horizon

As the deal/no-deal Brexit conundrum continues to roil UK politics, the British government has quietly sounded out strategic partners in the so-called “Five Eyes” security alliance for help in launching its own satellite positioning system. Due to leave the European Union on October 31, the UK faces a lockout from the continent’s Galileo system and services, most crucially its–as yet unrealized–Public Regulated Service (PRS), an encrypted navigation signal for governmental-authorized users and sensitive applications, that is, the military.

EGNSS, ERTMS Impacting Both Rail and Space

Two years ago, Inside GNSS published a feature article describing some exciting new capabilities and business models making GNSS use a key contributor to deploying European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on local and regional lines. Today, the train control segment remains one of the most important components of the railway market. In the railway domain, this control segment also is one of the most important in terms of industrial and technological innovation, in particular in Europe with the development and the continuous improvement of the European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System (ERTMS/ETCS) standards.

GMV Uses GPS and Galileo to Provide Robust Timing for the Financial Sector

An increasing number of applications require accurate, reliable, and traceable signals for time and synchronization. Key fields of application include banking and finance, telecom networks and electricity grids. GMV’s WANTime is a new time service for the city of Madrid, Spain, distributed using the White-Rabbit network protocol over optical fiber. A pilot customer of the service is currently the Madrid Stock Exchange (Bolsa de Madrid), connected to GMV’s datacenter by a network link of around 50 kilometers.
