On Thursday, June 9, Inside GNSS presented a 90-minute web seminar on “Hybrid Positioning and Technology for Mobile Users” with a panel of four experts from Skyhook, Spirent, Pinpoint Positioning and the University of Calgary’s mobile multi-sensor systems research group.They discussed accurate, robust and continuous positioning technologies that can be integrated into mobile devices for use in places where GPS signals are not available. These include multi-GNSS, Wi-Fi, cellular network and inertial and other sensors.

The sponsor, Spirent Communications, is a provider of signal and constellation simulators and related tools for designing and testing GNSS equipment and products incorporating GNSS technology.

Farshid Alizadeh-Shabdiz, Chief Scientist, Skyhook Wireless.
Topic: Wi-Fi positioning.

Alizadeh is responsible for the research and development of Skyhook’s positioning technology. He has more than 17 years of industrial experience in the design and implementation of satellite and wireless networks. Before joining Skyhook Wireless, he was the head of the communications section of Advanced Solutions Group (part of Cross Country Automotive Services). Earlier, he worked at Hughes Network Systems. Alizadeh was part of the design and implementation team of the three first satellite-based mobile networks: ICO global medium orbit satellite network voice and data services, Thuraya GEO satellite network, and the first phase of the Inmarsat high-speed data network. He is also on the faculty of Boston University. He received his Ph.D. from George Washington University and his M.S. from Tehran University.

Naser El-Sheimy, Professor and Canada Research Chair, Mobile Multi-Sensor Systems Research Group, Department of Geomatics Engineering, University of Calgary.
Topic: Inertial and other sensor technology

El-Sheimy’s area of expertise is in the integration of GNSS/INS/imaging sensors for navigation, mapping and GIS applications with special emphasis on the use of multi-sensors in portable navigation systems. He has a B.Sc. (Honor) degree in civil engineeringand an M.Sc. Degree in surveying engineering from Ain Shams University, Egypt, and a Ph.D. in geomatics engineering from the University of Calgary. El-Sheimy is the scientific director for TECTERRA, a not-for-profit Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR) established to enable the commercialization of geomatics technology across Canada. He is also the president of Technical Commission I on Sensors and Platforms of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS),” and the vice-chair of the special study group for mobile multi-sensor systems of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG).

Tony Haddrell, Managing Director of Pinpoint Positioning Ltd. and a director at Integrated Navigation Systems Ltd.
Topic: Use of multiple GNSS systems.

Haddrell’s career in GPS began in 1979 with Decca, and since then he has been associated with system architecture, receiver design and applications in the GNSS industry, now concentrating on designs and integration for cell phones. He was CTO at “GPS for phones” startup GloNav before that company’s acquisition by NXP, and his last industry role was with ST-Ericsson’s connectivity division. He is a self-employed consultant.

Brock Butler, Director for Wireless Location Technology at Spirent Communications.
Topic: Wireless network positioning techniques.

Butler joined Spirent in 1999 and has spent 12 years working in the wireless communications field. His responsibilities currently focus on leading Spirent’s location technology test solutions for mobile devices. Butler and his team participate in 3GPP, 3GPP2, and OMA standardization groups to advance the standardization of network-based and GNSS-based positioning technology for mobile phones.
He holds an MBA in Management and International Business from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-New Brunswick, and a BSEE in Computer Engineering, from Villanova University.
