Stanford and Aalborg Announce Summer Workshop on GNSS Positioning for the Future

A number of GNSS experts from the United States, Denmark, Norway and China will lead a weeklong workshop on the future of satellite-based positioning technologies from August 27 through September 2 at the Slettestrand Holiday Center in North Jutland, Denmark.

The topics range from GNSS basics and Intelligent Transportation Systems to new GNSSes, new receivers and indoor navigation as well as environmental monitoring and arctic navigation. The event is organized by Stanford and Aalborg universities.

Registration is open for the 2012 GPS Partnership Council meeting at the USAF Space and Missile Systems Center, Los Angeles AFB, on Tuesday, May 1 and Wednesday, May 2.  As always, participants can compete in a golf tournament on an optional third day of networking and camaraderie on Wednesday, May 3.

The registration deadline is April 27.

The British Royal Institute of Navigation has given prospective authors a May 4 deadline for abstracts for its annual conference, NAV12. The theme this year is "GNSS and Beyond."

Authors have a broad choice of navigation and technology topics from GNSS, eLoran and integrated systems technology to satellite navigation vulnerabilities to jamming and space weather to low-cost consumer apps design.

Join the 250 other technical presenters at this year’s Institute of Navigation GNSS conference and submit your abstract by Friday, March 9.

The U.S. Institute of Navigation sponsors the world’s oldest and largest conference on global navigation satellite systems. ION GNSS 2012 will take place next September 17 through 21 at the Nashville Convention Center in Tennessee. Tutorials and the CGSIC meeting will take place on September 17 and 18.

2012 Joint Navigation Conference begins on Tuesday, June 12, one day later than planned

The 2012 Joint Navigation Conference, previously scheduled to begin at the Crowne Plaza in Colorado Springs on Monday, June 11 will instead open on Tuesday, June 12 and run through Friday, June 15.

The change was made to accommodate the classified sessions that now will take place on Friday at the United States Air Force Academy.

[UPDATED November 1] The presidents of the European Parliament and European Council and the president and vice-president of the European Commission have issued an urgent call to EU business and government leaders and citizens to complete Galileo, the EU satellite navigation system, and other space-based initiatives even in the face of the current economic crisis.

They are patrons of a high-level European space policy conference to be held in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium on November 9 and 10.

Summer Dreams: Case Western Wins Robotic Lawnmower Contest

A team from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio took home the top $15,000 prize and a special award for the most aesthetically pleasing cut in the three-day 2011 Robotic Lawnmower Competition held in Dayton, Ohio on May 31 through June 2.

The second place award of $10,000 went to Auburn University and Wright State University won the third place prize of $5,500.

First Encounters: Asteroid MD 2011 Meets the GPS Constellation

A schoolbus-sized asteroid grazed the Earth’s atmosphere around 1:00 P.M. (EDT)  on June 27. It was 7,600 miles (12,300 km) away at its closest point, at which time it veered away across the South Atlantic Ocean.

It actually passed through the GPS constellation, alerting us to the vulnerability of our vital PNT space vehicles. We can now add asteroids to the the list of GNSS collision risks that already includes other satellites and space debris.

New Advanced Receiver Course Featured in NavtechGPS July Seminar

NavtechGPS, the Washington D.C.-based GNSS technology trainers, will introduce a new advanced receiver course for engineers and designers in their summer seminar series at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland next July 11-15.

The course is called "Using Advanced GPS/GNSS Signals and Systems." Signal and receiver design expert John Betz, MITRE Corporation, and James Sennott, president of Tracking and Imaging Systems, Inc will teach it.
