GPS III RFP Delayed Again as GAO Underscores GPS Schedule Challenges

An additional delay in release of the GPS III RFP emerged just as federal watchdogs released a new report detailing the challenges Air Fore managers will face in keeping all the components of the modernization program on track.

The long-expected report from the Government Accountability Office looks at the overall effort to update GPS including developing a new ground system, more capable receiver cards for military equipment and new satellites to sustain and improve the constellation.

Bill Would Mandate Building of GPS Timing Backup

Senate lawmakers have introduced a bi-partisan bill giving the Department of Transportation (DoT) responsibility for launching a GPS timing backup and a two-year deadline to get it up and running.

Sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, the National Timing Resilience and Security Act of 2017 (S 2220) would put a stop to interagency maneuvering over which organization is stuck with developing, managing and, most importantly, paying for the new system.

Completing the fourth delivery of 10 navigation payloads for Lockheed Martin’s GPS III satellites, Harris Corporation delivered the advanced navigation payload for the fourth GPS III Space Vehicle (SV04) to Lockheed Martin on October 29 – establishing a proven and reliable production cadence. Harris delivered two payloads in 2017 and is committed to delivering four more in 2018.

DATAGNSS, a company specialized in rugged data collector based in Hong Kong, just announced their cost-effective all-in-one handheld RTK receiver, D302-RTK.

D302-RTK is a high accuracy positioning handheld device with rugged design, based on Android OS. It integrates with optimized centimeter-level RTK positioning engine. With an external survey antenna or optional helix antenna, D302-RTK provides up to 2-centimeter positioning accuracy, according to the company. This RTK handheld device supports WiFi/BT/LTE networks.

Successful Liftoff: Ariane 5 Rocket Payload Carries 4 Galileo Satellites

Viewers watching Arianespace’s live video webcast Tuesday witnessed a successful launch that began at approximately 1820 GMT (1:20 p.m. EST).

Prior to liftoff, four European navigation satellites were fastened on top of an Ariane 5 rocket awaiting liftoff from Kourou, French Guiana, Tuesday to propel the Galileo navigation network closer to global service. The Ariane 5’s upper stage was slated to deliver the spacecraft to a circular orbit more than 14,000 miles above Earth around four hours after launch.

U.S. and China Satellite Cooperation Designed to Provide Better Protection, Service for Civilian GPS Users

Big news came out of Washington, D.C. earlier this week regarding BeiDou and GPS as he United States and China have negotiated compatible signal characteristics that will both protect and enhance service for users of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) and the equivalent Chinese system.
