Last October, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) Administrative Board reelected Carlo des Dorides as executive director of the GSA, giving him a second — and final — four-year term in charge of this key agency responsible for supporting the effective operation, maintenance, and security of Europe’s satellite navigation systems. We met with him recently at the GSA office in Prague to learn how he plans to see out his mandate.

Trends for marine accidents show rising numbers and costs that are mainly associated with collisions and groundings. Research indicates that about 60 percent of these accidents are caused by human error. The majority of them could have been avoided by providing suitable input to the navigation decision-making process, according to a 2008 report by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Safety Committee. Yesterday (April 28, 2016) the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully launched the seventh and final spacecraft for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The satellite, IRNSS-1G, was placed into orbit by a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C33).
According to ISRO, the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, watched the launch and “heartily thanked and congratulated” all the scientists and ISRO team for completing the IRNSS constellation, which he dedicated to the nation as “NavIC” (Navigation Indian Constellation).

The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) 2016 — this year’s incarnation of the largest international competition for commercial GNSS applications — is once again looking for outstanding ideas and business models. Entries will be accepted from until June 30 at the ESNC website.
Major institutions and regional partners are set to award prizes worth a total of €1 million in more than 25 categories.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has announced plans to launch the final satellite for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) on April 28.
The IRNSS-1G launch is scheduled for 12:50 p.m. local time from Satish Dhawan Space Center, in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, India, with the navigation payload being carried into space on India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C33).
