AGNSS Standardization for Location-Based Services
Michel Monnerat, Thales Alenia Space
Technology, standards, and business models are the three-legged stool of GNSS market development. In the case of consumer LBS, technology development has to include compatible, interoperable GNSS systems, telecom-network–based assistance capability, and evolving mobile-device functionality. This means that more signal resources must be incorporated into common data formats and message protocols — in a word: standardization. The author is the leader for assisted GNSS (AGNSS) developments at TAS in Toulouse, France.

Field-Testing Ways to Avoid GPS Vulnerability
Paul Benshoof, 746th Test Squadron with the JAMFEST team
Find out how JAMFEST exercise organizers create realistic jamming environments in multiple configurations to test and train participants in handling a GPS-challenged environment. The latest in this series of Department of Defense exercises will take place at White Sands Missile Range next fall.
Not by GNSS Alone
An FPGA-Based GPS/INS Integrated System
Yong Li, Peter Mumford, and Chris Rizos; University of New South Wales
Like the legendary cities of Shangri-la and Cibola, seamless navigation remains elusive. Land applications — which must navigate urban canyons, highway tunnels, and forests — are most likely to suffer from GPS outages. But system developers continue to explore a potential solution in GNSS integration with inertial sensors. This article describes development of a low-cost GPS/INS integrated system based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform.
COLUMNS
WORKING PAPERS
Fighting the Fading, Part III
Günter Hein, Andreas Teuber; University FAF Munich
Hans-Jörg Thierfelder, Anne Wolfe; Dresden University of Technology
In this third and final part of a series, the authors describe a new approach to model the behavior of signals propagating indoors. The results and analysis of field experiments using actual transmitted Galileo L1 and L5 signals are presented.
