Asia Multi-GNSS Demonstration Project Schedules Second Workshop in November

Organizers of an ambitious project in the Asia/Oceania region demonstrating the benefits and opportunities for using multiple GNSS systems are moving ahead in their effort to design and implement a five-year campaign.

The 2nd Asia Oceania Regional Workshop on GNSS will be held in Melbourne, Australia, on November  21–22, in the two days before the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Form (APRSAF) annual meeting in the city.

Jointly organized by the Satellite Positioning Research and Application Center (SPAC) of Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the International Global Navigation Satellite Systems Society (IGNSS), the workshop will focus on the targets, technologies, and expected outcomes of the Asia Oceania Multi-GNSS Demonstration Campaign.
The campaign seeks to take advantage of the early availability of multiple GNSS, regional, and augmentation systems over Asia and the western Pacific area.

The gathering is open to all international organizations, government agencies, industries, universities, and research institutes that have an interest in using multi-GNSS techniques in the Asia Oceania region. Registration details can be found on the project’s website.

Application areas include precision agriculture, machine guidance/control, disaster mitigation, intelligent transport system (ITS) applications, location based services (LBS), ionospheric and tropospheric observation, multi-GNSS monitoring networks, and others.

Following up on the first workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, in January 2010, the Melbourne event will discuss specific plans for multi-GNSS demonstrations in each field and seek to make decisions concerning implementation.

The multi-GNSS campaign received strong backing at the October 17–22 meeting of the International Committee on GNSS (ICG) in Torino, Italy, where Leo Eldredge, GNSS Program Manager for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, happened to present a proposal about enabling multi-constellation advanced receiver autonomous integrity monitoring for civil aircraft. Eldredge’s presentation was one of several at the ICG meeting that addressed how aviation and non-aviation users that could benefit from multi-GNSS integrity scenarios.
