What is navigation message authentication?

Q: What is navigation message authentication?  

A: As of today, all open civil GNSS signals are transmitted in the clear, conforming to interface specifications that are fully available in the public domain. Receivers will accept any input that conforms to the specifications and treat it as if it came from a GNSS satellite. Combined with the extremely low power levels of GNSS signals this makes it almost trivially simple to spoof a GNSS receiver.

BeiDou Phase 3 Signals Added to Spirent's GNSS RF Constellation Simulators

Spirent Communications plc, a provider in BeiDou, GPS and other GNSS testing solutions, announced this week that BeiDou Phase 3 signals have been added to its GNSS RF constellation simulators. The addition of these new signals to the GSS7000 and GSS9000 simulators follows the launch of the first two Beidou-3 satellites in November 2017.

Antenova’s New Compact Antenna Designed to Boost GNSS Signals From Difficult Locations

Antenova Ltd, manufacturer of antennas and RF antenna modules, launched a new compact, all-in-one active GNSS antenna, part number M20047-1, at the CES show in Las Vegas last week. The product adds another option to the company’s existing range of positioning antennas and modules.

The M20047-1 operates in the 1559-1609 MHz bands, and offers designers a useful, space-saving option for small tracking devices, according to the company, based in the United Kingdom.

DATAGNSS Launches D302-RTK Cost-Effective, High-Accuracy Handheld RTK Receiver

DATAGNSS, a company specialized in rugged data collector based in Hong Kong, just announced their cost-effective all-in-one handheld RTK receiver, D302-RTK.

D302-RTK is a high accuracy positioning handheld device with rugged design, based on Android OS. It integrates with optimized centimeter-level RTK positioning engine. With an external survey antenna or optional helix antenna, D302-RTK provides up to 2-centimeter positioning accuracy, according to the company. This RTK handheld device supports WiFi/BT/LTE networks.

Successful Liftoff: Ariane 5 Rocket Payload Carries 4 Galileo Satellites

Viewers watching Arianespace’s live video webcast Tuesday witnessed a successful launch that began at approximately 1820 GMT (1:20 p.m. EST).

Prior to liftoff, four European navigation satellites were fastened on top of an Ariane 5 rocket awaiting liftoff from Kourou, French Guiana, Tuesday to propel the Galileo navigation network closer to global service. The Ariane 5’s upper stage was slated to deliver the spacecraft to a circular orbit more than 14,000 miles above Earth around four hours after launch.
