Applanix, University of Waterloo Collaborate on Advanced Technologies for Autonomous Vehicles

Applanix, a Trimble Company, announced this week that it is collaborating on advanced research for autonomous vehicle guidance and control systems with the University of Waterloo Centre in Ontario, Canada for Automotive Research (WatCAR). Applanix will provide WatCAR with its Positioning and Orientation System (POS) for testing autonomous guidance and control systems in real-world conditions. Applanix will also provide the Trimble GNSS-Inertial board set for integration with car systems and sensors to enable precise positioning.

√ Inspired by the refugee crisis, Dutch start-up Avy has been working on robust, long-duration drones capable of detecting people in distress and, if necessary, dropping life jackets, life buoys, food and medicine. The rescue drone can take off from a boat or the shore, carrying among other items, a cylinder that contains a large deployable rescue buoy, which not only can keep refugees afloat but indicates its location to boats in the vicinity.

Montreal, Quebec-based Skydel Solutions announced a partnership with NOFFZ, a Germany-based technology company.

NOFFZ creates test systems and solutions in the area of the Internet of Things (IoT) — particularly in automotive RF-Test applications around eCall, Network Access Devices (NADs), Telematics Control Units (TCUs), Infotainment/Multimedia Units and Automotive Radar.

Trimble introduces the Trimble ABX-Two OEM GNSS sensor, designed to deliver precise heading, pitch, roll and 3D positioning information.

With two internal MB-Two modules, the ABX-Two offers a third antenna option that provides a drift-free, absolute attitude solution. The ABX-Two is well-suited for a wide variety of applications such as agriculture, automotive, aviation, construction and marine systems.

The announcement was made April 6 at Ocean Business 2017, an international event for ocean technology.

China’s domestically produced satellite navigation system BeiDou has made significant progress in terms of its accuracy, according to reports out of China earlier this month. At a recent press conference, BeiDou engineers claimed that a new accurate positioning chip can now help users arrive at their destinations with an error margin of just one to two meters.
