Car Technology Choice Study Shows Low Interest in Navigation Functions

Navigation technologies appear to be losing their charm among new car buyers in the United States.

Twenty years after Detroit introduced the first in-vehicle car navigation systems, employing GPS and digital map technology, collision avoidance appears to be the common theme among the most popular automotive technologies, according to a new J.D. Power study released last Wednesday (April 22, 2015).

Bipartisan Bill Would Force Creation of GPS Backup

Four leading lawmakers, apparently impatient with the Obama Administration’s less-than-urgent approach to assuring availability of critical navigation and timing resources, have sponsored a bill mandating the Department of Defense institute a backup for the Global Positioning System.

If approved, the National Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Resilience and Security Act of 2015 (H.R. 1678) would give the U.S. secretary of defense three years to establish, an alternative, land-based source for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) data.

GNSS and Precision Farming

Dr. John Fulton, Ohio State University

Nowhere has the fact that GNSS can guide things besides military weapons and transport manifested itself more profoundly than in agriculture.

While Google and automotive manufacturers struggle to figure out how to put autonomous vehicles on the highway, farmers have been using GNSS for well over a decade to guide equipment through their fields — along with a host of other ag-related, site-specific applications.

Indeed, GNSS — along with an array of other high-tech resources — is transforming agriculture at an accelerating rate.

Expanding EGNOS Horizons

GPS+EGNOS tracking device able to use EGNOS OS and EDAS mounted on a container

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) has a European regional coverage that could be extended quite easily to areas adjacent to the European Union. Backed by the European Commission, a public/private consortium is operating programs of technical assistance to prepare nations in the Mediterranean region to adopt and exploit European GNSS services in their priority market segments, namely aviation and road freight transport/logistics.

Driverless Cars

Stanley, an autonomous car developed by the Stanford University Racing Team, won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge after successfully traversing a 132-mile course.

Interest in automated vehicles is surging, fueled by visions of computer-directed cars able to independently thread their way through a traffic jam before safely dropping off their otherwise-occupied passengers and finding their own parking place.

New Leaders at the GPS Helm

Washington, D.C., has a peculiarity of seasons. While most of the world marks the shifts between winter and spring, summer and autumn, the politicos on the streets of the U.S. capital count the passage of time in two-year increments.

New operatives and appointees flock to the centers of power in the early days of each administration and the opening of each Congress, then migrate to friendlier climes as congressional elections loom and the administration winds down — as it is now.

Environmental Sensing

In the past 20 years GPS has simultaneously revolutionized both our modern infrastructure (by providing real-time navigation, mapping, and timing support) and our geodetic/surveying capabilities (by providing millimeter/centimeter-level positioning). At this point, most of the GNSS innovations we expect to see in the next decade will come from calculating positions more accurately and faster, while expanding from GPS to use of all available GNSS signals.

Market Research Firm Sees Bright Prospects for GNSS OEMs

A series of ABI Research studies released in recent months sketches a promising future of robust growth in GNSS OEM markets.

The London- and New York–based company’s 2014 GNSS IC vendor matrix released today (June 30, 2014) concluded that Qualcomm is the leading GPS IC vendor, followed by Broadcom, and — for the first time — MediaTek in third place after another year of strong growth and robust shipments as a result of its targeted design strategy.
