Criminal Liability Found in 2010 Explosion of Proton/GLONASS Satellites

Back in December of 2010, Inside GNSS reported that the loss of three GLONASS-M satellites in space resulted from a series of mistakes made by the Russian Energia rocket corporation. Now, more than six years later, Russian prosecutors have wrapped up a criminal case against four employees of Energia allegedly complicit in the crash of the Proton booster with three GLONASS satellites, and they’ve sent the case files to a court of law.

First Results

In February 2011, Russia launched the first satellite of the GLONASS-K1 series, i.e., SVN (space vehicle number) 801 (R26), which in addition to the legacy frequency division multiple access (FDMA) signals, for the first time was enabled to transmit code division multiple access (CDMA) signals on the GLONASS L3 frequency (1202.025 MHz). Later in 2014, the GLONASS program added SVNs 802 (R17) of series K1 and 755 (R21) of series M, and in 2016, SVN 751 of series M, with the capability of transmitting CDMA L3 signals to the constellation.

New GLONASS-M Survives Slight Glitch to Reach Orbit

Russia announced a successful launch of another GLONASS-M satellite on Sunday (May 29, 2016) despite an “irregularity” in the performance of the Fregat upper stage.

According to a report by the TASS state news agency, the Fregat operated longer than planned and used its engines to deliver the spacecraft safely into orbit. The Russian Defense Ministry’s press service reported earlier that a stable telemetry link had been established with the satellite and that onboard systems are functioning normally.

Russia Delays Launch of Next GLONASS Satellite

The Russian news agency TASS has reported that the launch of GLONASS-M satellite No. 53 from the Plesetsk cosmodrome has been rescheduled from May 21 to May 29, according to Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems CEO Nikolay Testoyedov.

The launch postponement has nothing to do with the satellite’s condition, Testoyedov said.

Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos announced earlier that a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket was expected to bring a new Glonass-M satellite into orbit.

OriginGPS Shrinks Multi-GNSS Module

OriginGPS has launched its Multi Micro Spider multi-GNSS module, which features a 5.6 x 5.6-millimeter footprint and 2.65-millimeter height.

Like its predecessor, the Multi Micro Hornet (which measured 10 x 10 x 6.1 millimeters), the ORG4033 uses MediaTek’s MT3333 and is positioned for applications that require minimal power consumption and ultra-small form factors, ranging from wearables to drones. Unlike the Hornet, the Multi Micro Spider supports Europe’s Galileo system as well as GPS, GLONASS, and BeiDou.

GNSS Leaders Reveal Plans at Munich Summit

Representatives of the world’s GNSS providers outlined the current plans and progress of their systems at the 2016 Munich Satellite Navigation Summit in Germany.

BeiDou has entered its transition period from Phase II to Phase III, with test and validation of the next phase with its new signal structures and frequencies taking place through the second half of 2017, said Jun Shen, deputy director for International Research at the China Satellite Navigation Office.
